Power-to-X Compression Solutions

Green Hydrogen Production is the starting point for many Power-to-X pathways. The hydrogen may be compressed for storage, transportation or direct use, or combined with Carbon Dioxide (CO₂), carbon monoxide or Nitrogen (N₂) to produce synthetic gases, fuels and chemical feedstocks.

Reliable compression can be required at several stages of the PtX value chain. Depending on the process, compressors may handle hydrogen, carbon dioxide, Synthesis Gas (Syngas), methane, nitrogen or other process gases. The resulting pathways include applications such as E-Fuel Production and synthetic Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

Each compression duty presents different requirements regarding gas composition, pressure, capacity, purity and operating profile. Every compressor solution must therefore be evaluated for its specific process stage rather than for the Power-to-X plant as a whole.

With more than 80 years of experience in reciprocating high pressure compressor technology and decades of experience in hydrogen compression, LMF develops tailor-made compressor solutions for Power-to-X applications. Every solution is individually engineered according to the compressed gas, process stage, operating conditions and applicable project specifications.

FAQs

Power-to-X is a collective term for technologies that convert electrical energy into another energy carrier, fuel, chemical or product. Examples include renewable hydrogen, synthetic methane, methanol, ammonia and liquid e-fuels.
Green hydrogen production is one possible first stage within a Power-to-X value chain. Power-to-X also includes the storage or direct use of hydrogen and its further conversion into fuels, gases or chemical products.
Compression may be required after electrolysis, before gas storage or transportation, during feed-gas preparation, before chemical synthesis and in process-gas recycling. The exact duties depend on the selected PtX pathway.
Depending on the process, compression may be required for hydrogen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, synthesis gas, methane, nitrogen and other process gases or gas mixtures.
Not automatically. Every compression duty must be evaluated separately because gas properties, composition, purity, pressure and operating conditions affect materials, sealing concepts and compressor configuration. A shared compressor is only possible where the complete operating envelope has been specifically engineered for it.
