Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) Compression Solutions

Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is a highly toxic and flammable gas encountered in oil and gas production, refining, petrochemical processing and other industrial applications. Compressor solutions handling H₂S-containing streams require application-specific engineering and carefully coordinated safety measures.

Typical duties include sour gas compression, acid gas handling, gas sweetening, sulfur recovery and acid gas reinjection. The H₂S concentration can range from a minor component in a gas mixture to a major part of the process stream.

The complete gas composition is essential for compressor design. Water content, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons and other components influence corrosion risk, material compatibility, condensation behavior and thermodynamic performance. Wet H₂S-containing streams can present particularly demanding corrosion and sour-service conditions.

Materials, sealing systems, distance-piece configuration, vent and drain connections, monitoring interfaces and package auxiliaries must be selected according to the gas composition and applicable project specifications. The compressor package must also be integrated into the plant’s ventilation, gas detection, shutdown and emergency-response concept.

With more than 80 years of experience in reciprocating high pressure compressor technology, LMF develops tailor-made compressor solutions for H₂S and sour gas applications. Every solution is individually engineered according to the gas analysis, operating conditions, duty profile and project-specific safety requirements.

FAQs

H₂S-containing streams may require compression in sour gas processing, acid gas handling and reinjection, gas sweetening, sulfur recovery and other refinery or petrochemical processes. The H₂S concentration and operating conditions vary considerably between applications.
Hydrogen sulfide is highly toxic and flammable. In combination with water and other gas components, it can also create demanding corrosion and material-compatibility conditions. Leakage control and integration into the plant safety system are therefore critical.
Water can significantly increase the corrosiveness of H₂S-containing gas streams and influence condensation within the compressor system. Water content and the expected operating envelope must be known when selecting materials and defining temperature control and separation requirements.
Depending on the project, measures can include application-specific sealing systems, suitable distance-piece arrangements, controlled vents and drains, leakage monitoring interfaces and connection to a safe disposal or recovery system. The complete containment concept must be coordinated with the plant design.
