Fertilizer Production Compression Solutions

Nitrogen-based fertilizers such as ammonia and urea are produced through complex chemical processes involving gases at elevated pressures. Reliable gas compression is required to supply feed gases, maintain process conditions and recycle unconverted gases within the production plant.

Ammonia production combines hydrogen and nitrogen in a catalytic synthesis process. Urea is subsequently produced from ammonia and carbon dioxide, making fertilizer production an important industrial application for captured or process-derived CO₂.

Depending on the plant configuration, compressor solutions may handle hydrogen, nitrogen, synthesis gas, carbon dioxide, ammonia-containing streams and other process gases. Each compression duty presents different requirements regarding gas composition, pressure, temperature, material compatibility and sealing systems.

Continuous fertilizer production places high demands on compressor availability, operating stability and maintainability. The compressor package must therefore be engineered for the specific process stage and complete operating range.

With more than 80 years of experience in reciprocating high pressure compressor technology, LMF develops tailor-made compressor solutions for fertilizer production. Every solution is individually engineered according to the gas composition, process conditions, operating profile and applicable project specifications.

FAQs

Compression may be required for feed-gas preparation, synthesis gas supply, ammonia synthesis, process-gas recycling and carbon dioxide delivery for urea production. The specific duties depend on the plant configuration.
Ammonia synthesis requires hydrogen and nitrogen to be supplied at the pressure specified by the synthesis process. Compression may also be required within the synthesis loop to recycle unconverted process gas.
Urea is produced from ammonia and carbon dioxide. The CO₂ must be supplied at the purity, pressure and capacity required by the urea process, making CO₂ conditioning and compression important upstream steps.
Depending on the process stage, compressor solutions may handle hydrogen, nitrogen, synthesis gas, carbon dioxide and application-specific process-gas mixtures. Every duty must be evaluated using the complete gas composition.
LMF’s core scope is the reciprocating compressor solution for defined process-gas duties. Reactors, synthesis technology, gas-generation systems and complete fertilizer plants are separate systems unless explicitly included in the agreed project scope.
