High Pressure Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) Compressors

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) plays an increasingly important role in industrial decarbonization and carbon management. Applications involving carbon capture, transportation, utilization and storage require compressor solutions capable of operating safely and efficiently under demanding process conditions.

CO₂ compression presents specific engineering challenges. Its physical properties and phase behavior depend strongly on pressure and temperature, requiring compressor technology specifically engineered for the application, operating conditions and required CO₂ quality.

With more than 80 years of experience in reciprocating high pressure compressor technology, LMF develops tailor-made CO₂ compressor solutions for carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), industrial processes and energy applications worldwide. Every solution is individually engineered according to the required pressure, capacity, CO₂ composition, temperature and operating conditions.

FAQs

LMF develops reciprocating high pressure compressor solutions for CO₂ applications. Reciprocating compressors are particularly suitable for applications requiring high pressure ratios, reliable operation and flexible adaptation to different process conditions.

Depending on the application, LMF provides mobile compressor units, ISO 13631 compressors and API 618 compressor solutions.

Yes. Every LMF CO₂ compressor solution is individually engineered according to the required pressure, capacity, CO₂ composition, temperature, operating conditions and process requirements. This tailor-made approach ensures reliable and efficient long-term operation for the specific application.
The physical properties and phase behavior of CO₂ change significantly depending on pressure and temperature. Compressor solutions must therefore be engineered for the expected operating range and CO₂ condition, including applications involving gaseous, dense-phase or supercritical CO₂.

The gas composition, moisture content and potential impurities must also be considered when selecting materials, sealing concepts and compressor configuration.

Carbon dioxide reaches its supercritical state at pressures above 73.8 bar and temperatures above 31.1°C. In this state, CO₂ combines properties of gases and liquids, enabling high fluid density and efficient transportation and processing.

Supercritical CO₂ is therefore particularly relevant for carbon capture, transportation, utilization and storage applications.

Moisture in CO₂ can form carbonic acid, increasing the risk of corrosion within the compressor package and connected infrastructure. Dry CO₂ reduces this risk and can allow more economical material selection, depending on the gas composition, operating conditions and project requirements.
