Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Compression Solutions

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is Natural Gas stored at high pressure to reduce the volume required for transportation, intermediate storage and use as a fuel. CNG applications include vehicle refueling stations, mobile gas transportation and industrial natural gas supply.

Biomethane meeting the required gas-quality specification can also be compressed and used as Bio-CNG. Where biomethane is supplied through an existing gas network, Biomethane Grid Injection may form part of the upstream infrastructure.

CNG facilities may operate continuously or experience fluctuating demand and short filling peaks. Compressor capacity, storage arrangement and control strategy must therefore be coordinated to provide the required gas quantity without unnecessary oversizing.

With more than 80 years of experience in reciprocating high pressure compressor technology, LMF develops tailor-made CNG compressor solutions. Every solution is individually engineered according to the gas composition, suction conditions, required filling pressure, demand profile and applicable project specifications.

FAQs

Compressed Natural Gas is natural gas that has been compressed to high pressure for storage, transportation or use as a fuel. The required pressure depends on the application, storage system and applicable specifications.
CNG stores natural gas as a compressed gas at ambient or near-ambient temperature. LNG stores natural gas as a cryogenic liquid at approximately −162 °C. The storage systems, infrastructure and compression requirements are therefore fundamentally different.
Yes. Biomethane meeting the applicable gas-quality requirements can be compressed and used as Bio-CNG. Its composition, moisture content and residual impurities must be considered when configuring the compressor solution.
Fast-fill stations use high-pressure storage and compressor capacity designed to refuel vehicles within a short period. Time-fill systems refuel vehicles over a longer period and may require a different balance between compressor capacity and storage volume.
LMF provides trunk-type compressors for compact installations and ISO 13631 compressors for applications requiring higher capacities or continuous operation. Final selection depends on the gas composition, supply pressure, filling pressure, required flow rate and operating profile.
