Synthesis Gas (Syngas) Compression Solutions

Synthesis gas, commonly known as syngas, is a gas mixture primarily composed of Hydrogen (H₂) and carbon monoxide. Depending on the feedstock and production process, it may also contain Carbon Dioxide (CO₂), methane, Nitrogen (N₂), water vapor and other components.

Syngas is an important intermediate in the production of chemicals, E-Fuels and synthetic Sustainable Aviation Fuel. Many of these production pathways form part of broader Power-to-X value chains. Reliable compression is required to bring the gas to the pressure needed for downstream conversion, processing, transportation or storage.

The varying composition and properties of syngas place specific demands on compressor design. Gas composition, contaminants, moisture content, operating pressures, temperatures and potential fluctuations must be considered when selecting materials, sealing systems and the overall package configuration.

With more than 80 years of experience in reciprocating high pressure compressor technology, LMF develops tailor-made compressor solutions for syngas and other synthetic gas applications. Every solution is individually engineered according to the gas composition, process conditions, operating profile and applicable project specifications.

FAQs

Synthesis gas, commonly called syngas, is a gas mixture primarily consisting of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Its exact composition depends on the feedstock, production process and subsequent gas treatment.
Syngas is used as an intermediate for producing hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, synthetic hydrocarbons, sustainable aviation fuel and other chemicals and energy carriers.
Compression brings the syngas to the pressure required for downstream synthesis, gas treatment, transportation or storage. The required pressure level and compressor arrangement depend on the specific production pathway and process design.
The concentrations of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen, moisture and other components influence material selection, sealing concepts and package configuration. Potentially toxic, corrosive or condensable components must also be considered during engineering.
LMF provides ISO 13631 and API 618 reciprocating compressor solutions for syngas applications. The appropriate configuration depends on the gas composition, required capacity, pressure ratio, operating profile and applicable project specifications.
