Biomethane Grid Injection Compression Solutions

Biomethane provides a renewable alternative to fossil natural gas and can be transported, stored and distributed using existing gas infrastructure. After biogas has been upgraded to the required gas quality, the biomethane must be compressed to the pressure specified by the receiving transmission or distribution network.

Reliable compression is essential for continuous grid injection. The compressor solution must accommodate the available suction pressure, required injection pressure, flow rate, gas composition and changing network conditions while supporting high availability, efficient operation and minimized methane emissions.

With more than 80 years of experience in reciprocating high pressure compressor technology, LMF develops tailor-made compressor solutions for biomethane grid injection applications. Every solution is individually engineered according to the process conditions, grid requirements, installation environment and applicable project specifications.

For projects requiring gas to be transferred from a lower-pressure network to a higher-pressure network, explore our Biomethane Reverse Flow Solutions.

Recommended Compression Solutions by LMF

Mobile Compressors

Recommended for temporary biomethane compression during maintenance, commissioning, plant modifications or the construction of a permanent compressor station. Mobile compressor units provide flexible compression capacity wherever a temporary connection to the gas network is required.

  • Capacity:
    up to 22 Nm³/min
  • Pressure:
    up to 120 bar
  • Power consumption:
    up to 350 kW

ISO 13631 Compressors

Recommended for continuous biomethane grid injection applications requiring stable flow rates, high availability and project-specific package engineering. Pressure-tight crankcase designs are available for elevated suction pressures, helping to reduce potential methane emissions and product losses.

  • Capacity:
    up to 3 000 Nm³/h
  • Pressure:
    up to 50 bar
    Pressure-tight up to 25 barg
  • Power consumption:
    up to 300 kW

FAQs

Biomethane must be supplied at a pressure above the pressure of the receiving gas network. Compression provides the pressure increase required for controlled and reliable injection into the transmission or distribution grid.
Grid injection generally refers to feeding upgraded biomethane into a gas network. Reverse flow is required when gas must be transferred from a lower-pressure network level to a higher-pressure network because local biomethane production exceeds local demand or network capacity.
Depending on the required capacity, pressure ratio, operating profile and installation concept, LMF provides ISO 13631 compressors for permanent operation and mobile compressor units for temporary compression requirements.
Biomethane composition, moisture content, residual impurities and potential fluctuations affect material selection, sealing systems and package configuration. LMF evaluates the available gas analysis and operating conditions when engineering the compressor solution.
Potential methane emissions can be reduced through suitable sealing concepts, pressure-tight crankcase designs, controlled vent and leakage-gas systems, and application-specific package engineering. The appropriate configuration depends on the operating pressures and project requirements.
